Description
Scampton, a parish in Lincolnshire, 6 1/2 miles NE of Saxilby station on the G.N. and G.E. Joint railway, and 5 1/2 NNW of Lincoln. It has a post office under Lincoln; money order and telegraph office, Ingham. Acreage, 2203; population, 231. The manor belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are the chief landowners. Scampton Hall was built on the site of a grange to Kirkstead Abbey, and became a farmhouse. The pavement of a Roman villa was found in 1795. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £180 with residence. The church is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, N aisle, S porch, and an embattled western tower; it was restored and partly rebuilt in 1877. Till Bridge is a hamlet 3 miles W, on the river Till.
