Description
Legbourne, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village stands 3 miles SE of Louth, and has a station on the East Lincolnshire section of the G.N.R. It has a post office under Lonth; money order and telegraph office, Loutb. Acreage, 2365; population, 464. A neat modern mansion, called the Abbey, occupies the site of a Cistercian nunnery which was founded by Robert Fitz-Gilbert before the time of King John, and which has left no vestiges. Kenwick Hall is a large mansion standing amidst beautiful grounds. The Jiving is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, o£96 with residence. The church, which is a plain building of stone in the Decorated style, consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower; contains a small ancient piscina, seven stained windows, and a carved oak rood screen. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and Free Methodist chapels.
