Swepstone, a parish, with a village and two hamlets, in Leicestershire, 5 miles S by E of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, 2 W from Heather station, and 2 E from Snareston station, both on the M.B. and L. & N.W.R. It has a post office under Ashby-de-la-Zouch; money order and telegraph office, Maesham. Acreage, 2318; population of. the civil parish, 509; of the ecclesiastical, with Snareston, 811. The manor belongs to the Gurdon family. The living is a rectory, united with Snareston, in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £1022 with residence. The church is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and an embattled western tower. Newton Burgoland is a hamlet 1 mile SE of Swepstone village. The manor belongs to Earl Howe, and most of the land to Lord Belper. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels. Newton Nethercote is a hamlet about a mile SE of the village. Lord Belper is chief landowner, and Earl Howe is lord of the manor.
