Stapleford, a parish in Leicestershire, near Saxby station on the Syston and Peterborough and Kettering and Nottingham branches of the M.R., and 4 miles E by S of Melton Mowbray. Post town and money order office, Melton Mowbray; telegraph office, Saxby railway station. Acreage, 2273; population, 125. Stapleford Park, the old seat of the Earls of Harborough, now the property of the Grettons, who are lords of the manor and sole landowners, is a fine ancient mansion of stone, originally erected in 1470, standing in a deer-park of over 900 acres. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Saxby. The church, which stands in Stapleford Park, was erected in 1783. It contains many ancient tombs and monuments, chiefly memorials of the Sherard family.
