Description
Prestwold, a parish, comprising the townships of Prestwold, Burton-on-the Wolds, and Cotes, and the chapelry of Hoton, in Leicestershire. It lies on an affluent of the river Soar, near the boundary with Notts, 2 1/2 miles NE from Loughborough station on the M.R. It has a post office at Burton-on-the Wolds and another at Hoton, under Loughborough ; money order office, Wymeswold; telegraph office, Barrow-on-Soar. Acreage, 5398 ; population, 744. Burton Hall, a large mansion standing in a park, is the seat of the Duke of Somerset, who is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Prestwold Hall, a fine mansion standing in an extensive park, is the seat of the Packe family. The living is a donative, united with the perpetual curacy of Hoton, in the diocese of Peterborough. The parish church is a handsome building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, and an embattled western tower, and contains monuments of the Packes. Hoton Church was rebuilt in 1837, and consists of chancel, nave, and an embattled western tower. There is a mission church at Bnrton. There are two Wesleyan chapels.
