Pickwell, a village and a parish in Leicestershire, adjacent to Rutland, 4 miles E by N of John of Gaunt station on the Newark, Melton, and Nottingham branch of the Great Northern and London and North-Western Joint railway, and 5 3/4 1/2 SE of Melton Mowbray. The parish contains the hamlet of Leesthorpe, and its post town is Oakham; money order and telegraph office, Somerby. Acreage, 2378; population, 262. The manor of Pickwell belongs to the Frewen family. Leesthorpe Hall stands on the road to Melton Mowbray, and is a fine country mansion. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £389 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Gainsborough. The church is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and an embattled western tower. Dr Cave, the author of " Lives of the Apostles " and other works, was a native.
