Description
Oadby, a village, a township, and a parish in Leicestershire. The village stands 2 miles ENE of Wigston station on the M.R., and 3 1/2 SE of Leicester; is a large place, chiefly of one long street, very clean and neatly edificed; carries on framework knitting and the manufacture of boots and shoes for the Leicester manufacturers; and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leicester. The parish comprises 2164 acres; population of the civil parish, 1865; of the ecclesiastical, 1852. The manor belongs to the Powys-Keck family. There is a racecourse which was formed in 1883, comprises 196 acres, and overlooks the valley of the Soar. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £232 with residence. The church is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, was extensively repaired in 1887, has a tower with octagonal spire, and contains a piscina, sedilia, and several ancient monuments. There are Baptist and Free Methodist chapels, and some useful charities.
