Description
Earl Shilton, a township and a parish in Leicestershire, 1 1/4 mile NW from Elmsthorpe station on the L. & N.W.R., and 4 miles NE from Hinckley, with a post, money order, and telegraph office under Hinckley. Acreage, 2077 ; population of the civil parish, 2594 ; of ecclesiastical, 2632. The manor belongs to the Duchy of Lancaster, and had formerly a Norman castle. Many of the inhabitants are framework knitters, and the manufacture of boots and shoes and hosiery is carried on. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Elmsthorpe, in the diocese of Peterborough; joint net yearly value, £125 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Lovelace. The church, which is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, was erected in 1856. There are Baptist, Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels, and an endowed school. Charities are worth about £100 a year.
