Description
Barkby, a township and a parish in Leicestershire. The township lies on an affluent of the river Wreak, 1 1/2 mile S by E of Syston station on the M.R., and 4 1/2 miles NE of Leicester, and it includes the hamlet of Hambleton. The parish contains also the hamlet of Barkby-Thorpe. It has a post office under Leicester; money order and telegraph office, Syston. Acreage, 2299; population of the civil parish, 631; of the ecclesiastical, 690. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £127 with residence. The church is large and was built in 1350. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.
