Urswick, Lancashire

Description
Urswick, a parish in Lancashire, 3 miles SSW of Ulverston, and 1 1/2 mile from Lindal station on the Furness railway. It has a post office, called Great Urswick, under Ulverston ; money order and telegraph office, Lindal. The parish comprises Adgarley, Bardsea, Great and Little Urswick, and Stainton. Acreage, 4026 of land and 1263 of water and foreshore; population of the civil parish, 1274; of the ecclesiastical, 1023. There is a parish council consisting of eight members. The manors belong to the Crown and the Earl of Derby. There are iron mines in the neighbourhood. Roman coins have been found. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £172 with residence. The church is an ancient building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, and an embattled western tower. The. vicarage of Bardsea is a separate benefice. There is an endowed school with £15 a year at Little Urswick.
