Tonge, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Prestwich parish, Lancashire. The township lies around Middleton railway station, adjacent to the SE side of Middleton. Post town, Middleton; money order and telegraph office, Middleton, under Manchester. Acreage, 392; population, 8099. There are cotton and silk mills. The ecclesiastical parish includes Alkrington township, and was constituted in 1842. Population, 6171. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Prestwich. The church was built in 1839, and consists of chancel, nave, and bell turret.
