Description
Read, a township and a parish in Lancashire, 3 miles E of Whalley railway station. There is a post and money order office under Blackburn; telegraph office, Padiham. Acreage, including part of Sabden, 1548; population, 1359. There is a parish council consisting of seven members and a chairman. The manor, with Read Hall, belongs to the Fort family. The church, dedicated to St John the Evangelist, was erected in 1885, and consists of chancel, nave, S porch, and bell-turret. There are cotton mills, a reading-room with library, and Liberal and Constitutional clubs.
