Haughton, a village and a township in Manchester parish, Lancashire. The village stands 1 mile from Denton station on the L. & N.W.B., on the river Tame, at the boundary with Cheshire, 3 1/2 miles NNE of Stockport. It shares with Denton village an ancient felt hat manufacture, still an important trade. Coal-mining is largely carried on. There is a post and money order office at Haughton Green, under Manchester; telegraph office, Denton. The township comprises 887 acres; population, 5327. It is divided into th& ecclesiastical parishes of St Mary the Virgin (population, 1823), and St Anne (4357), which were constituted in 1879 and 1881. Part of the former is in the ancient county of Chester. The living of St Mary the Virgin is a rectory in. the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £262 with residence. Patron, the Bishop. The church was built in 1876.
