Description
Ellel, a township and a chapelry in Lancashire. The township is in Cockerham parish, and lies adjacent to the Lancaster Canal, and the L. & N.W.R. near Galgate station, 4 miles S of Lancaster. The township includes the village of Galgate, which has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Lancaster; and also a silk spinning mill, and a Wesleyan chapel. Area of township, 5814 acres, of which 32 are water; population, 1799; of the ecclesiastical parish, 1318. Ellel Grange, the seat of the Preston family, and Ellel Hall, the seat of the Ford family, are chief residences. The chapelry is less extensive than the township, and was constituted in 1858. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £269 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Cocker-ham. The church is a plain building erected in 1800. At Ellel Grange is a small but beautiful church in the French Gothic style. The living is a perpetual curacy; gross value, £150 with residence.
