Crompton, a township in Lancashire. The township is in Prestwich parish, and within Oldham parliamentary borough, lies near the Oldham and Rochdale railways, 3 miles N of Oldham, and contains the villages of High Crompton, Cowlishaw and shaw, the last of which has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Oldham, and a station on the L.&Y.R., and is divided into the chapelries or East Crompton, High Crompton, and Crompton or Shaw. Acreage, 2864; population, 12,901. The township is goverened by a local board of twelve members. Many of the inhabitants are employed in collieries and in large cotton mills. The living of Shaw or Crompton is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; value, £400 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Prestwich. The living of High Crompton is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; value, £204. Patron, the Bishop.
