Description
Portswood, an ecclesiastical parish taken out of the original parish of South Stoneham, Hants. Its name is derived from the old Roman Port at the mouth of the Itclien, and it lies half a mile from Swathling station on the L. & S.W.R., within Southampton borough, 2 miles NNE of Southampton town. It has a post office under Southampton ; money order and telegraph office, Bevois Hill. Population of Christchurch, 2846; of St Deny's, 4509 The parish was constituted in 1848, and was divided into two in 1867. Christ Church, which is frequently called " Highfield Church," was erected in 1844, and has been twice enlarged. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Winchester; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Winchester. St Deny's Church, erected in 1868, is a brick building in the Gothic style, and has been enlarged. The living is a vicarage; net value, £300. Patron, the Bishop of Winchester. The Cobden Free Bridge over the Itchen was erected at the cost of The National Liberal Land Company, and opened in 1883. It crosses the river in five spans of 72 1/2 feet each.
