Laverstoke, Hampshire

Description
Laverstoke, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands in the valley of the Test, 2 miles from Overton station on the L. & S.W.R., and has a paper mill, which was established in the time of George I., and which makes the paper of the notes of the Bank of England. Post town, Micheldever. Acreage of the civil parish, 1957; population, 173; of the ecclesiastical, 530. Laverstoke House is the residence of the Portal family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester, united with Freefolk; value, £300. The old church, containing tablets of the Portal family from the time of their arrival in Huguenot days, has been made into a mortuary chapel, and a beautiful new church was erected in 1894.
