Heckfield, Hampshire

Description
Heckfield, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands near the river Loddon and the boundary with Berks, 5 1/2 miles NW of Winchfield station on the L. & S.W.R., and 5 1/2 N by W of Odiham. It has a post and telegraph office under Winchfield; money order office, Swallowfield. The parish comprises 3232 acres; population, 564. Heckfield House is a chief residence. Part of Stratfieldsaye Park, the seat of the Duke of Wellington, is within the limits. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; value, £280 with residence. Patron, New College, Oxford. The church is ancient, with a massive tower, was well repaired in 1830£ and again in 1877, and contains a fine font and some interesting monuments. The vicarage of Mattingley is a separate benefice. There is a monument in this parish to the Duke of Wellington, standing nearly 80 feet high.
