Description
Hawkley, a parish in Hants, near the boundary with Sussex, 3 1/2 miles from Lisa station on the L. & S.W.R., with a post office under West Luss; money order and telegraph office, West Luss. Acreage, 1446; population, 334. Hawkley Hanger is a steep hill clothed with wood, and commands a remarkable view. Cobbett says, on reaching the top of it, " Never in all my life was I so surprised and so delighted. I pulled up my horse and sat and looked, and it was like looking from the top of a castle down into the sea, except that the valley was land and not water." Hawkley Harst is a chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; value, £120 with residence. The church is good.
