Hamble-le-Rice, a parish in Hants, on Southampton water, at the mouth of the Hamble river, 2 1/2 miles SSE of Netley station on the L. & S.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Southampton. Acreage, 413 of land and 870 of water and foreshore; population, 423. A Cistercian priory was founded here as a cell to Tirone Abbey in France. At the suppression of alien monasteries this priory was purchased, in 1391, by William of Wykeham for Winchester College. Some remains exist of an ancient castle on a projecting point of land on the shore. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £106 with residence. Patron, Winchester College. The church is ancient, has some Norman traces, and contains several monuments; it was restored and enlarged in 1880.
