Chawton, a parish in Hants, 2 miles SSW of Alton station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town, Alton. Acreage, 2674; population, 455. Chawton House is the seat of the Knight family. The house is Tudor, much enlarged. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; net value, oE310 with residence. The church is in the Early Decorated .style, and has 300 sittings. A new organ and a handsome chancel screen have lately been erected. The old church was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1871. There is a Working Men's Club.
