Wick and Abson, Gloucestershire

Wick, a hamlet and an ecclesiastical parish in Abson parish, Gloucestershire, on the river Boyd, 2 miles E by S of Warmley station on the M.R., and 6 N of Bath. It has a post office under Bath; money order and telegraph office, Warmley. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1880; population, 763. The valley of the Boyd is flanked by perpendicular rocks, rising to a height of 200 feet, and containing quartz crystals known as Bristol diamonds. On the summit of the N cliff is a Roman camp covering an area of 12 acres, and defended by a broad ditch and a double vallum. Wick Court is a fine Elizabethan residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £276 with residence. The church was built in 1850. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels.
