Baunton, Gloucestershire

Baunton, a village and a parish in Gloucestershire, on the Churn river and the Fosse Way, 1 1/4 mile N of Cirencester, which is the post town. Acreage, 1367; population, 133. The manor belonged to the Abbey Cirencester, and was acquired by their steward, one George, at the dissolution of the monasteries. It remained for a long time in the George family, one of whom represented Cirencester in the Long Parliament. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, consolidated with the rectory of Stratton; joint net value, £230 with residence. The church is Early English, and consists only of nave and chancel, and on the south wall there is a very ancient fresco of St Christopher; it was restored in 1877, and is said to be dedicated to St Mary Magdalen.
