Lamesley, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Durham, with a station on the Team Valley railway, 4 miles S of Gateshead. Post town, Gateshead; money order and telegraph office, Birtley. The township comprises Eighton Banks, Kibblesworth, Hedley, and Eavensworth. Acreage, 7176; population, 4924; of the ecclesiastical parish, 2557. The manor belongs to the Earl of Eavensworth, whose seat, Eavensworth Castle, is a beautiful building of different styles standing in a park near the village. There are some collieries. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Durham; net value, £214 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Eavensworth. The church was rebuilt in 1759, has a tower of 1821, and contains several stained windows. Considerable alterations and additions were made to it in 1884. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels at Kibblesworth, an almshonse erected in 1835 for eight aged persons, and other charities.
