Eldon, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Durham, near the Darlington and Conset Branch railway, 2 1/4 miles SE by E of Bishop Auckland, and U mile from New Shildon station on the N.E.R. There is a post office at Eldon Lane, under Bishop Auckland; money order office, Bishop Auckland ; telegraph office, Close House. Acreage, 1421; population of the township, 1646; of the ecclesiastical parish, 4179. The parish comprises Coundon Grange, Eldon, and Close House, and was constituted in 1877. It gives the title of Earl to the family of Scott. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Durham; net value, £298 with residence. Patrons, the Crown and the Bishop alternately. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The South Durham Coal Co.'s colliery of Eldon is in this parish.
