Cockfield, Durham

Cockfield, a village, a township, and a parish in Durham. The township lies under Cockfield Fell, near Raby Park, 7 miles NE of Barnard Castle, and has a station on the N.E.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office (R.S.O.) Acreage of township, 1606 ; population, 1572 ; of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes Staindrop, 4118. The parish contains also the township of Woodland. Coal has been worked here for five centuries, but is worked less now than formerly. Stone also has been and is largely quarried. Lines of entrenchment are on Cockfield Fell. The living is a rectory, united with the vicarage of Staindrop, in the diocese of Durham ; joint net value, £300 with residence. Patron, Lord Barnard. The church is an ancient building in the Early English style, and was restored in 1868. There are also Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels and a cemetery.
