Purse Caundle, Dorset

Description
Caundle Purse, a parish in Dorsetshire, on the verge of the county, 2 1/2 miles SE of Milborne Port railway station, and 4 1/4 E of Sherborne, which is the post town; money order and telegraph office, Milborne Port. Acreage, 1558 ; population, 160. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £150 with residence. In this parish is a fine old mansion called the Manor House, said to have been the property of King John, and one of his hunting seats.

Parish Church
The church of St. Peter is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1883 at a cost of £600: in 1896 the chancel and tower were restored at a cost of £150 and again in 1904 at a cost of £400; there are 130 sittings.

The register dates from the year 1731.
