Description
Compton, Over, a parish in Dorsetshire, at the boundary with Wilts, 3 miles from Sherborne station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town, Compton, under Sherborne; money order and telegraph office, Nether Compton. Acreage, 688; population, 129. Over Compton House is the seat of the Goodden family. The living is a rectory, annexed to the rectory of Nether Compton, in the diocese of Salisbury. The church is good.
Parish Church
The church of St. Michael is a small building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with chapel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 4 bells: the tower is 63 feet high, and is built of Ham Hill stone: the east window and three others are stained: there are 140 sittings.
The register dates from the year 1626.
