Captain of "The Revenge" which held the Spanish Fleet at bay off Flores. Cousin of Ralegh-he also sailed from Plymouth/ 1585 to establish a colony in America. On 12.12.1586 returned to Bideford with seven ships after a fruitless voyage to relieve the colony set up in Virginia in 1584 by Walter Raleigh and later by Grenville himself. When he arrived he found only two dead, Drake had already collected starving survivors in June. In 1590 set out with Lord Thomas Howard to intercept Spanish treasure off the Azores.Died after capture
