Description
Winkleigh, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village stands 4 miles from Eggesford station on the L. & S.W.R., and 5 1/4 SW of Chulmleigh. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, contains several good residences, and has cattle fairs on the first Monday after 8 July, and the first Wednesday in October. Acreage of parish, 9218; population, 1066. There is a parish council of eleven members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter; net value, £250 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church of All Saints is old but good, and was thoroughly restored in 1873 at a cost of £7000. There are Wesleyan, Bible Christian, and Congregational chapels, an almshouse for five poor women, and a reading-room.
