Description
Clyst-St Mary, a parish in Devonshire, on the river Clyst, 2 miles from Topsham station on the L. & S.W.R., and 3 1/2 ESE of Exeter. It has a post office under Exeter ; money order and telegraph office at Pinhoe and Topsham. Acreage, 589; population, 197. Winslade House is a seat in the neighbourhood. It belonged in succession to the Porchers, Porters, and Dixons. Clyst Heath was the scene of Lord Russell's defeat in 1549. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; value, £148 with residence. The church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, was neatly restored in 1869 ; it consists of nave, chancel, and aisles, with embattled tower and three bells, and has five beautiful memorial windows to the Barnes and Dixon families, and tablets to the Porchers. There is a memorial cross to the Porters in the churchyard.
