Description
Challacombe, a parish in Devonshire, on the river Bray, near its sources, on the verge of the county at Exmoor Forest, 10 miles NE of Barnstaple railway station. Post town, Barnstaple. Acreage, 5499 ; population, 226. The manor and most of the property belong to Earl Fortescue. The surface is hilly, and to a large extent high wild moorland. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; net value, £200 with residence. Patron, Earl Fortescue. The church is in the Gothic style, with a tower, and was restored in 1850.
