Description
Sawley and Wilsthorpe, a village, a township, and a parish in Derbyshire. The village stands on the river Trent, near the Erewash Canal and the M.R., 8 1/2 miles ESE of Derby, was once a market-town, and has a post and money order office under Derby, a railway station with telegraph, and a church institute. The township comprises 1771 acres of land and 89 of water; population, 1415. The parish contains likewise the township of Long Eaton. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to the Earl of Harrington. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £300 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield. The church is ancient, of different styles, and has a tower and lofty spire with six bells. The vicarage of Long Eaton is a separate benefice. There are General Baptist, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels.
