Description
Pinxton, a village and a parish in Derbyshire and Notts, The village stands adjacent to a branch of the Erewash Canal, to the Mansfield branch of the Erewash Valley railway, 3 miles E by S of Alfreton, and 6 from Mansfield. It has stations on the G.N.R., M.S. & L.R., and M.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Alfreton. The parish comprises 1253 acres, of which 99 are in Notts; population, 2390. There is a parish council consisting of eight members. The manor, with Brookbill Hall, belongs to the Coke family. Longwood Hall is another chief residence. Coal is extensively mined. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £200 with residence. The church stands on an eminence; consists of nave and chancel, with a tower; and contains memorial windows and tablets to the Cokes. There are Free and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a church mission room built in 1880, in which, on account of the small size of the church, most of the services are held.
