Wingfield, North, a township and a parish in Derbyshire. The township lies on the M.R., half a mile NNE of Claycross railway station, 4 1/2 miles S by E of Chesterfield, and about 147 from London. It has a post and money order office under Chesterfield; telegraph office, Claycross (R.S.) Acreage, 1551; population, 2395. The parish includes Claylane or Claycross, Tupton, Stretton, Pilsley, and Woodthorpe townships. There are collieries and ironworks. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 3760. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £716 with residence. The church is an ancient building in the Perpendicular and Late Norman styles, and was thoroughly restored in 1872 and 1880. It consists of clerestoried chancel and nave of four bays, aisles, S porch, and lofty embattled tower; it contains an old octagonal font, several effigies, and memorial windows. There are New Connexion and Primitive Methodist chapels. The churchyard was enlarged in 1887. The vicarage of Claycross is a separate benefice.
