Middleton and Smerrill, a joint township in Youlgreave parish, Derbyshire, 5 miles SSW of Bakewell, 4 1/2 from Rowsley station on the M.R., and 3 from Parsley Hay station on the L. & N.W.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Youlgreave, under Bakewell. Acreage, 2956; population, 176. Middleton Hall is the seat of the Bateman family, and was the residence of the late Mr T. Bateman, who investigated the antiquities of the county and formed a large museum. Arborlowes Ring is a complete Druidical circle, and there are many barrows in which Celtic relics have been found. There are a chapel of ease and Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels.
