Horsley, Derbyshire

Description
Horsley, a township and a parish in Derbyshire. The township lies adjacent to the Derby, Little Eaton, and Ripley railway, 1 mile from Cockbench station on the M.R., and 2 1/2 miles SE of Belper. It has a post office under Derby; money order and telegraph office, Kilbum. Acreage of township, 1296; population, 368; of the civil parish, 2729; of the ecclesiastical, 1810. The parish contains also the townships of Horsley Woodhouse and Kilbourne. The manor belongs to the Sitwell family, who are the chief landowners. Horston Castle was bnilt here in the early part of the 13th century by Ralph de Burun, but has been destroyed. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; gross value, £234. The church stands on an eminence, is Early English, consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and lofty spire, and was restored in 1858-60. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
