Description
Etwall, a township an d a parish in Derbyshire. The township lies 6 miles SW of Derby, has a station on the G.N.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Derby. Acreage, 2081; population of the township, 641; of the ecclesiastical parish, 892. The parish includes also the townships of Burnaston and Bearwardcote. Etwall Hall and Etwall Lodge are chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £429 with residence. The church is a fine old Norman structure, and there is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. An hospital for 16 almsmen was founded in Etwall in 1577 on the same foundation as the grammar school at Repton. See REPTON.
