Description
Edensor, a village, a township, and a parish in Derbyshire. the village stands on the river Derwent, half a mile W of Chatsworth House, and 2 miles ENE of Bakewell railway station. It is a pretty place of villa-cottages, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Bakewell, and a good inn. Acreage, 2336 ; population, 246. The parish contains also the township of Pilsley. Population, 523. The property belongs to the Duke of Devonshire, who is lord of the manor. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of South-well ; net value, £300. Patron, the Duke of Devonshire. The church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1867 in the Decorated style, has a pinnacled tower, and contains a splendid alabaster monument to the first Earl of Devonshire. Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was assassinated in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, is buried in the family vault in the churchyard.
