Darley Abbey, Derbyshire

Description
Darley Abbey, a parish in Derbyshire, on the river Dor-went, adjacent to the Derby and Leeds railway, 1 1/2 mile N of Derby. It has a post and money order office under Derby; telegraph office, Derby. Population, 848. There are an extensive paper manufactory and a large cotton mill. A small Augustinian priory was founded here in the time of Henry I. by the Abbot of St Helens, and given at the dissolution to the Wests. A mansion, called Darley Abbey, is now the seat of the Evans family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £300 with residence. The church is modern, and in 1886 was re-seated, and a new organ, pulpit, and handsome font were erected.
