Codnor, Derbyshire

Description
Codnor, a pretty hamlet forming with that of Loscoe a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Derbyshire. The hamlet lies near the Erewash river, canal, and railway, 5 1/2 miles ENE of Belper. The railway station called Crossbill and Codnor is almost in the centre of the parish. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office at Codnor under Derby. The parish bears the name of Codnor-with-Loscoe, and has an area of 1931 acres. Population of Codnor, 3848; of Loscoe, 670 ; total, 4518. The inhabitants are employed in a large colliery at Loscoe and in the ironworks in the neighbourhood. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; gross value, £220 with residence. Patron. alternately the Crown and the Bishop. The church is modern, and has been greatly enlarged and beautified, and reseated. There are also Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, Baptist, and United Free Methodist chapels. The parish includes Aldercar Hall, Wamsgrove Hall, Loscoe Hall, and Armonde Fields. Codnor Castle is in ruins.
