Description
Charlesworth, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Derbyshire. The village lies on the river Etherow, near the High Peak, 1 1/2 mile from Broadbottom railway station, 2 1/4miles from Glossop railway station, and 8 1/4 N of Chapel-en-le-Frith, and has a post office under Manchester; money order and telegraph office, Broadbottom. The inhabitants are chiefly cotton spinners and rope makers. The principal landowner is Lord Howard of Glossop, who is lord of the manor. The parish includes the townships of Chisworth, Simmondley, and Gamesley. Population, 2477. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £190 with residence. Patron, alternately the Crown and the Bishop. The church is modern, and there are Congregational, Particular Baptist, and Wesleyan chapels.
