Wythburn, Cumberland

Description
Wythburn, an ecclesiastical parish in Crosthwaite parish, Cumberland, at the head of Legberthwaite, under Helvellyn, 8 1/4 miles SSE of Keswick railway station. It has a post office under Grasmere (R.S.O.); money order office, Dale Head; telegraph office, Grasmere. Population, 110. The whole parish, with the exception of the small glebe, is the property of the Corporation of Manchester, as also the lake, which, by means of an embankment constructed at the N end, at the outlet into St John's Beck, has been raised 20 feet, and supplies Manchester with some of the finest and purest water in the kingdom. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £142 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Crosthwaite. The church is a small plain building, consisting of chancel, nave, and bell-turret. It was restored in 1872, when the chancel was added. Dunmail Raise, a pass about 800 feet above the sea level, over which runs the road from Grasmere to Keswick, is in this parish.
