Ulpha, Cumberland

Ulpha, a township-chapelry in Millom parish, Cumberland, on the river Duddon, 4 miles N of Broughton railway station. It has a post office under Broughton-in-Furness (S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Broughton. Acreage, 13,002; population, 279. The manor belongs to the Earl of Lonsdale. The reach of the valley along the Duddon possesses much beauty. There are slate quarries and copper mines at present unworked, and a bobbin mill. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £207 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Millom. The church is ancient, consists of nave, W porch, and bell-gable, and contains an old stone font. The " kirk of Ulpha," says Wordsworth, " to the pilgrim's eye is welcome as a star." There is a Wesleyan chapel.
