Description
Skirwith, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Kirkland parish, Cumberland, 4 1/2 miles from Temple Sowerby station on the N.E.R., and 7 1/2 E by N of Penrith. Post town, Carlisle; money order and telegraph office, Culgaith. Acreage, 5249; population, 286; of the ecclesiastical parish, 272. Skirwith Abbey is the seat of the Parker family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £100 with residence. The church was built in 1859, and consists of chancel, nave, aisle, and tower with spire. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
