Description
Winnington, a township in Wilton or Northwich ecclesiastical parish, Cheshire, on the river Weaver, 1 mile NW of Northwich. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Northwich. Acreage, 806; population, 2246. The manor belonged anciently to the Wynningtons, passed to the Warburtons and the Pennants, and thence to Lord Stanley of Alderley and others. Winnington Bridge was the scene of a sharp conflict in the Civil Wars of Charles I. There are large and important alkali works.
