Description
Peover, Over, a parochial chapelry in Rostherne parish, Cheshire, on the river Peover, 2 1/2 miles WSW of Chelford station on the L. & N.W.R. and 3 1/2 SSE of Knutsford. It comprises the township of Peover Superior and a portion of that of Snelson. It has a post and telegraph office under Knutsford; money order office, Chelford. Population, 592. There is a parish council consisting of eight members. The manor of Peover Superior, with Peover Hall, belongs to the baronet family of Mainwaring. Peover Hall is an old Elizabethan mansion, standing in an extensive park. The church is adjacent to the hall. It was orginally built in the 14th century, consists of nave, chancel, two side chapels, and a tower, and was rebuilt in 1811, with the exception of the chapels. The Mainwaring chapel is on the S side of the nave, and contains monuments of the Mainwarings. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; net value, £180 with residence.
