Description
Oakington (formerly Hockington) 1/2 a village and a parish in Cambridgeshire. The village stands adjacent to the Cambridge line of the G.E.R., 1 3/4 mile NE of the Via Devana, and 4 1/2 miles NW of Cambridge, has a station on the railway, and a post and money order office under Cambridge; telegraph office, Cottenhain. The parish contains also the hamlet of Westwick. Acreage, 2025; population, 480. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; gross value, £150 with residence. Patron, Queen's College, Cambridge. The church, which is a building of stone chiefly in the Decorated style, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and a western tower. It has been several times repaired, and in 1850 there were found, under its ancient reading-desk, a lid-covered stone coffin and three massive stone coffin lids of the 14th century. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, and some small charities.
