Description
Charlton, a township in Wantage parish, Berks, adjacent to the Berks and Wilts Canal, near the G.W.R., 1 mile NE of Wantage, which is the post town. Acreage, 1884; population, 260. The hamlet forms a vicarage with Wantage in the diocese of Oxford; joint gross yearly value, £572 with residence. There is a chapel of ease, a small building of brick in the Early English style. Old Charlton House, now known as " The Chestnuts," belonged once to the Wilmots, and was visited in their time by Charles I.
